History of the Greater Macon Chapter
The process of forming the chapter began in 1996. Dance classes were being held at the historic Hay House with instructor Paula East. A. J. Lee was new in town from Youngstown, Ohio and with Paula East co-founded the Middle Georgia Chapter of the Southern Ballroom Dance Association. Students in Paula's classes, which were being held at the Hay House, The Wellness Center, and the Macon Health Club, signed up and become the charter members of the first ballroom dance group. The chapter was chartered in early 1997 and retained the name of Southern Ballroom Dance Association until National changed the organization's name to USABDA, which was United States Amateur Ballroom Dance Association. The same members that formed the original chapter under National remained. The chapter's first officers were A. J. Lee, President, and Reinhard Unger, Vice-President. A.J. Lee passed away at the age of 55 on July 9, 2002, and Rex Childs became chapter president at that time. Reinhard Unger now lives in Florida, yet still remains as a chapter member. Paula East, a co-founder and a dance instructor, has been a professional in the dance industry along with serving 10 years as a dance consultant to the chapter and ambassador to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the largest state Sports Museum in the Nation. Paula remains active with the Greater Macon Chapter ##6059 of USA Dance.
National changed the name to USA Dance in 2005, and the present chapter, known as the Greater Macon Chapter ##6059 of USA Dance, holds its monthly dances at Howard Community Club, 5645 Forsyth Road, Macon, Georgia.
The chapter is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Known as the Greater Macon Chapter ##6059 of USA Dance since 2008, the chapter continues its commitment and mission in line with that of USA Dance National to improve the quality and the quantity of ballroom dancing in the United States. USA Dance Inc. is the National Governing Body for Dance Sport in the United States and with 174 chapters throughout the country is also the representative organization for all social and recreational ballroom and Latin dancers in America of all ages and skill levels who have one thing in common - the love of dance!
Music for our monthly dances is licensed by BMI and ASCAP through USA Dance Inc.
